GENERAL SUMMARY/ OVERVIEW STATEMENT

The BWH Research Compliance Coordinator will have responsibility for supporting research compliance activities at Brigham and Women’s Hospital, with a strong focus specifically on the animal welfare program. The Research Compliance Coordinator will monitor activities within BWH research facilities to assure adherence to institutional, state and federal regulations, SOPs, and study protocols. Monitoring will include review of study-related documents as required, study team interviews, on-site compliance guidance/training and creation of site visit reports. The Coordinator will have a strong educational role and will lead one-on-one and group training programs to promote awareness of developments in the field of animal welfare and research compliance as needed.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Assist in the development, implementation, review and revision of BWH-specific research policies and procedures that will meet the goals and objectives of the BWH, Partners and Harvard Medical Area research compliance programs.
  • With guidance from the Director of BWH Research Compliance, the Director of Research Compliance at Partners, and the Administrative Director of the Harvard Office for Research Subjects Protection, assist with the development of a quality improvement/quality assurance program for the collaborative BWH/HMS animal welfare program. Develop policies and procedures for implementation of the program, including a standardized checklist to formalize the monitoring process.
  • Perform research study monitoring, including selection of protocols, review of pertinent study-related documentation, interviews with study personnel, lab inspection. Generate formal written report with results from each monitoring visit to be distributed as appropriate.
  • Provide one-on-one guidance and training to study personnel, as needed.
  • Assist with research compliance-related orientation and training for new research staff.
  • Perform risk assessments and trend analyses, with particular attention on animal welfare activities, to identify areas for improvement.
  • With assistance and guidance from the Director of BWH Research Compliance , develop a monitoring and education program to address areas identified by the risk assessments.
  • Provide guidance to investigators with regard to IACUC submissions. Perform protocol pre-review as necessary.
  • Attend IACUC meetings; serve as liaison and advocate for the BWH Research Compliance program and BWH investigators.
  • Research periodicals, internet sites, and government publications to keep abreast of federal, state, and local developments and compliance efforts related to research. Develop communication tools to share this information effectively across the BWH research community.
  • Investigate reports related to noncompliance at BWH.
  • In cooperation with the Director of BWH Research Compliance and the BWH Senior Vice President Research identify and develop corrective action plans to address instances of noncompliance, as appropriate.
  • Perform other related duties as required.
QUALIFICATIONS
  • Baccalaureate Degree in Science discipline required.
  • Very strong preference for certified Veterinary Technician with experience in surgical care.
  • LATG certification strongly preferred.
  • Significant background in animal research.
  • Preferred experience in animal facilities management.
  • Preferred knowledge and understanding of legislation, regulations, policies, procedures and ethical issues concerning the protection of animal subjects.
  • Thorough familiarity with current applicable laws and regulations, including federal, state, and non-federal regulations surrounding research and research grants.
