President's Message - March 2008

Certified Manager of Animal Resources (CMAR) Program
The CMAR Program was established by a teaming agreement in late 1999 between AALAS and LAMA. A contractual agreement exists between AALAS and ICPM (Institute of Certified Professional Managers) for the administration of the exams. In 2001, the first individuals earned their CMAR certifications. As we reach the ending of the first quarter of 2008, we have over 180 individuals currently holding active CMAR Status.
Last fall, Dr. Chris Newcomer, AALAS President established as one of his Presidential Goals to have an ad hoc Task Force established to look at the CMAR Program. The Task Force is referred to as the CMAR Task Force (CMARTF) and its members include Bruce Kennedy, Deb Benner, Steve Niemi and me. The Task Force is charged to address four key areas:
- Program cost, subsidy.
- Program content, and therefore, “value” to applicants, employers and AALAS.
- Program ownership-possible alternate faculty structures.
- Program participation/enrollment enhancement: marketing and alternate pathways towards the CMAR accomplishment.
The Task Force would like to gather your opinions on the overall CMAR Program and specificity to the four key areas stated above. In addition, we would like to know:
- If individuals pursuing the certification process experienced any obstacles, hardships or problems.
- How relevant the program is to the laboratory animal management field.
- Opinions on the two-year re-certification continuing education (24 CEU’s) requirements of the program (Units, Fees, Timing, etc.).
- Opinions on the exam eligibility requirements for the program (education, work experience, managerial capacity, etc.)?
We welcome your feedback on the CMAR Program.
The CMAR Committee is composed of members appointed from both LAMA and AALAS. Our LAMA Members are appointed for three-year terms of consecutive leadership responsibility and a Board of Director Liaison. If you have specific questions about the logistics of the current CMAR Program, please contact any member of the CMAR Committee. The CMAR Committee Members are: Lisa Brown, Cindy Buckmaster, Jefferson Childs, Michelle Courtney, Chris Hart, Cindy Horner, Liz Pelletier, Bill Sherrier, Paige Werner, Sally Westlake and Marti White.
Enjoy the beginnings of Spring!
