LAMA President’s Corner
President's Message - November 2007
|
“A Woman is like a tea bag ---- you never know how strong she is until she gets into hot water”
Eleanor Roosevelt
As we enter the final two months of 2007, this column reflects a collection of recent activities that LAMA members have been participating in this fall season.
On October 13, 2007, we held our annual social event with ASLAP at Oehler’s BBQ in Charlotte. Prior to the BBQ, a small group had the opportunity to participate in a facility tour of the University of North Carolina at Charlotte Animal Facility. Norm Lefrevbre, Pam Rowe and the technical staff did a wonderful job with welcoming us into their facility and answering all of our questions. I also would like to express my gratitude to the LAMA/ASLAP BBQ Volunteers for making the night fun for our attendees. Maxine Drapper (Kim’s mom), Kim Scamardo, Valeri Lansford, Pat Sikes, Guerra Benberry, Gina Correa-Murphy, Norm Lefrevbre, John Occaso, and Howard Mosher. Each event that LAMA coordinates provides a learning opportunity for me and the BBQ was no exception, I learned that LAMA and ASLAP Members greatly prefer wine over beer.
Thanks to the great generosity of our LAMA and ASLAP Members attending the BBQ, our 50/50 for the LAMA Foundation raised $216. I would like to thank the 50/50 team of Valeri Lansford, Lisa Brown, Kim Scamardo, Maxine Drapper, and Howard Mosher for making the fundraiser a success. Please remember that the LAMA Foundation awards scholarships for the ILAM Program and for other professional management development. Please feel free to contact Leo Yanas, Carmine Bianco, Kim Scamardo, Kyrsten Koebach and Howard Mosher, if you have any questions regarding the scholarships that are offered through the LAMA Foundation. Also, at the 2008 Portland LAMA/ATA Meeting, we will be having a silent and live auction to raise money for the Foundation, please consider donating an item to the auction.
During the National AALAS Meeting, we had a number of LAMA Members help with staffing both the LAMA and the CMAR Booths. I would like to thank Liz Stich, Kyrsten Koebach, Marie Ortega, Carolyn Malinowski, Lisa Brown, Lane Watkins, Angie Glasscock, Terry Receveur, Karen Montijo and Jenny Manthe for donating their time in the LAMA Booth.
Immediately following the National AALAS Meeting, John Chappell ended his three-year service to LAMA on the CMAR Committee. John worked hard at making improvements to and publicizing the CMAR Program. He devoted his time and money to making the program continue and I would like to express my sincere appreciation to him for all of the work that he did on behalf of the CMAR Program. We welcome Bill Sherrier to the CMAR Committee. Bill joins Chris Hart and Cindy Buckmaster on the CMAR Committee representing LAMA. Please feel free to contact any member of the CMAR Committee with your questions or comments about the certification program.
Finally, in response to our late summer mailing to the membership regarding your membership records, over 600 responses out of 850 mailed were received back to the ASI Office. This represents over 70% of our current members took the time and motivation to update their membership record. To me, the decision to mail-out the membership record update was a good financial investment for LAMA’s future. It clearly demonstrates the high importance that our members place on having their records corrects and was a great wake-up call for the LAMA Leadership. A new membership record correction form has been added to the website and we encourage you to continually report any problems that you have with your LAMA Membership to Keith Knapp at ASI (kknapp@miia.org). In April, 2008, LAMA through the generosity of Harlan, will be issuing a new membership directory to all members.
Happy Thanksgiving,
Kim
